The Christmas carol “Der Tag der ist so freudenreich” was composed in the late Middle Ages. The text is a translation of the medieval “Dies est laetitiae”, which became particularly popular in the three-part version of the Glogauer Liederbuch (ca. 1480). The German version found its way into both Catholic and Protestant circles.

The day that is so full of joy
of all creatures,
for the Son of God from the kingdom of heaven,
is born of a virgin upon nature.
Mary, you are beyond redemption,
that you would be a mother.
What happened so strangely?
God’s Son from the kingdom of heaven,
is born man.
