1835-1882

Born on July 26, 1835 in Rees (oldest town on the Lower Rhine in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia).

His father was an organist and choir director – so he was introduced to church music at an early age. After attending the episcopal boys’ seminary, he was ordained a priest at the age of 23. He took up his first chaplaincy in Sonsbeck, then moved to Münster as cathedral vicar and was director of the Gregorianum Boys’ Choir Institute. Due to a laryngeal disease, this task became increasingly difficult for him, so that he first came to Kevelaer as chaplain, followed by the chaplaincy in Straelen in 1869. Here he founded a boys’ and men’s choir and inspired the singers to sing liturgical music. By the standards of the time, his musical performances must have been unique. He composed his first mass for the Straelen choir. When his laryngitis worsened, he threw himself into composing, and his second mass was already published by the Cäcilienverein. Now there were more and more requests for compositions. His latest compositions were recommended in relevant journals such as Musica sacra or the Gregoriusblatt (from 1876), “gladly sung because of their ease of performance and pleasing style”. His works were published by well-known music publishers, but there is no complete catalog of his works. Jasper’s compositions are influenced by Cäcilianism, the church music reform movement of the 19th century
